@@@The fundamental role of peace education against nuclear war

I would like to introduce our activities and emphasize the importance to teach the real effects of the atomic destruction in peace education. We are making much of peace education to citizens, especially to younger people.

I think the most important and fundamental role of peace education for prevention of nuclear war is to let them know the real outcome of nuclear war. The best way is through hearing the Hibakushafs talk directly. Have you ever listened to testimonies of Hibakusha or visited the peace museum at Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

In August every year, we support Hibakushafs talk about their hellish experiences to elementary and junior high school students. Most students are surprised and moved by the Hibakushafs talking and they think and hope to make some possible action for peace. On annual Orizuru day in our city, they bring many strings of one thousand paper cranes in front of the Orizurufs monument and pray for gno more Hiroshima ,Nagasaki and no nuclear war.

We also present some teaching materials to the teachers who work hard for peace education. Last year, we presented the comic book gBarefoot Genh. gBarefoot Genh is not so famous now as Harry Potter series all over the world, but very popular in Japan. This is one of the books devoured among children. The herofs name Gen means a root or a source in Japanese. The cartoonist Keiji Nakazawa had a hellish experience of the A-bomb when he was seven. In an all-action comic book format, he describes the miserable state of Hiroshima that had the first atomic bomb in the history of mankind and the way of the peoplefs lives after that.

He said I want Gen to become a source of the new generationfs strength

with the strength to say no and to oppose nuclear weapons, stepping on the scorched earth in Hiroshima with his bare feet and feeling the firm ground on his feet.

Recently, the volunteer group Project Gen in my city translated this from Japanese into into English. Vol.1 and 2 have been already published. Today, I have here. I hope this gBarefoot Genh will be read all over the world.

We also hold a cinema show and peace concert. Last year, we held documentary film show gHibakusha ~ the end of the worldh.

This May, we held gOrizuruh peace concert with younger people. We invited Shihei Umehara for this concert. I think he is the best singer who can express humanity, love and peace in Japan. The song of gOrizuruh, his own writing and composition, is also loved and sung in English,Chinese and Spanish. On preparing for this concert the younger people listened to Hibakushafs testimony and studied hard about DU and discussed earnestly what they can do for peace. Their massage delivered at the end of the concert moved the audience strongly. They presented a paper crane to each audience as a seed of peace. This new style paper crane contains our intensified hope for an abolition of nuclear weapons.

These younger people attended the world conference against A&H bomb this year. One of the French delegates saw their activities and said gNext year, I will join this conference with one hundred young personsh.

Now, we and young people work to collect a new international signature. Toward the NPT review conference, we must gather the signature to raise public opinions for the abolition of nuclear weapons. Please join this new signature campaign.

Next year is the 60th anniversary of the atomic bombing. What we should teach? Dr.Osler taught us gListen to the patient, so he tell his diagnosish Hibakusha are getting older, they have little residual time. Please visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki and listen to their voices.
